The impact you have on each of your children is enormous. Everything we do at the church is miniscule compared with the foundational formation you give your children in every moment you spend with them. What an incredible gift! At St. Joseph's, we want to help you to maximize the positive impact you have in your children's lives. That's why our Faith Formation program is designed to support you as parents. We want to assist you as you embark on the incredible journey of raising a tiny human into a mature and unique adult. Here's how we plan to help:
Families are welcome at all of our Sunday liturgies. We love the sound of a church full of kids and we hope every Sunday feels like a joyful (and occasionally chaotic) family reunion! We also have begun offering kids coloring sheets, crayons, and board books about mass to any families who would like them. Just ask one of our greeters and they can get you whatever you need!
If you have an infant or toddler who needs to be baptized, call the Central Office to begin the process! Kevin Sullivan will work with your family to prepare for and plan this awesome sacrament. If you have an elementary through high school aged kid who needs to be baptized, contact Laurel to make a special plan for your child and family. Most often, this involves a few special meetings followed by a stunning reception into the Church at Easter. We would be delighted to share this incredible encounter with you!
Starting in Fall 2023, we are offering a Parent Support Group for young parents on Friday mornings at 8:00am. While you have a chance to bond with other parents and discuss the practicals of living your faith as a family, your preschool age children (ages 3-6) are invited to participate in a special session of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in the "atrium." (To learn more about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, see below.) We'll also have coffee, breakfast, and toys for the little ones (ages 0-2). We hope you can join us for these special mornings! Contact Laurel to learn more.
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd ("CGS" for short) is a Montessori-style experience for young children. This adorable model allows kids ages 3-6 to encounter Scripture and the liturgy in a beautiful, hands-on way in a special room called an "atrium." This space is designed intentionally to help our little ones learn to be curious, reflective, and prayerful while they work with the activities available to them. Register below to join us on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00pm (ideal for 4K and Kindergarten) or contact Laurel to participate in our Preschool Program on Friday mornings (ideal for 3 and 4 year olds).
While children receive general formation about the sacraments in our Wednesday groups, the specific preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion takes place in a program called "Second Grade Sacraments." This group partners with families of second graders and older to fill this special year with incredible memories and unique encounters. We gather once a month as a large group to share a meal, learn, and pray together at the church. In addition, we send home an adorable box filled with all of the supplies and instructions needed for weekly family activities throughout the year! After an awesome 6 months of preparation, First Communion is celebrated on Easter Sunday. Contact Laurel to register or to make a unique plan for your family!
Our 3rd-5th graders participate in our "after-school youth group." We pick them up right from the intermediate school, feed them a healthy-ish snack, let them play/decompress for a little while, and then eventually gather them into a (cool) classroom for prayer, learning, and discussion. By 5 o'clock, they are laughing with their friends, filled with our faith, and ready for some food. Register below to join us!
Our incredible Meal Team offers a free family meal every Wednesday when there is Faith Formation from 5:00-6:30pm. The home-cooked food is always paired with a lavish salad bar (great for parents who want some vegetables) and an amazing dessert (usually one of Dianne's famous brownies). We will also have a couple of adults devoted to supervising kids in a designated play area, so that you parents can keep eating and chatting while your kids run off and play. The menu is sent out in advance each week in Laurel's "Monday Memo," so you always know what we are serving!
New in Fall 2023, our "Dad Days" are designed for preteen kids (grades 5-8) and their fathers or father-figures. It's an afternoon of bonding over brunch, games, and coming-of-age conversations. The three core messages of the day are "you are amazing," "your body is amazing," and "your choices matter." Statistically, we know that these messages are most impactful if they come from dad, but we'll send home information so that mothers and mother-figures can be a part of the conversation, too! We'll also touch on some key puberty topics to pave the way for you to continue those discussions at home with your child. This year, our father-son brunch will be on Sunday, October 22nd, and our father-daughter brunch will be on Sunday, April 14th. Contact Laurel to register!
Our Middle School Youth Group meets on Wednesdays after sports from 6:30-8:00pm. We surround the kids with leaders who care about them and honor their energy and curiosity with silly games, honest discussions, and loud fun. Our content rotates from year to year, but our goals are always the same: invite them to make a concrete decision to follow Jesus in the midst of our chaotic world and empower them as leaders who love God, love themselves, and love others! Register below to join us.
Our high schoolers participate in YDisciple (youth disciple) Small Groups. These groups are split up by gender and are led by an awesome mentor chosen by the teens. Most kids love them as a safe space to talk about their lives, bond with other high schoolers, and ask real questions about God! However, if your teen isn't interested in participating in a group, they are still invited to be a part of YDisciple with a one-on-one mentor. Since these groups can meet anytime and anywhere, we are able to be flexible with would be most helpful for your teen as they navigate high school. Register below to join us!
Our diocese invites teens to be confirmed in 11th grade or older. This incredible sacrament is a powerful encounter with the Holy Spirit that empowers those who receive it to go out and share God with the world through their unique calling. To help teens prepare for Confirmation, our "Confirmation Cohort" meets for seven weeks on Sunday mornings prior to the sacrament. Our next scheduled Confirmation will be in Fall 2024, but if your family would like help to prepare for Confirmation sooner, contact Laurel.
During the summer, our cluster participates in two amazing camp experiences:
Totus Tuus
(elementary/middle/high school)
This day camp is hosted at St. Joseph for local elementary, middle, and high schoolers by a traveling group of college kids and seminarians. Each day consists of a Day Program for the younger kids and an Evening Program for the teens filled with faith, friends, and fun! The Day Program runs from 9:00am until 2:30pm Monday-Friday for kids entering grades 1-6. The Evening Program runs from 7:30pm until 9:45pm Sunday-Thursday for kids entering grades 7-12.
Extreme Faith Camp
(middle/high school)
This overnight camp is hosted at Crosswoods Adventure Camp for Catholic kids all around the region. The main participants are middle schoolers, but high schoolers are invited to return as small group leaders! For many kids, it's the highlight of their whole year.
