Catholic Schools in The Diocese of Superior -- Discover Catholic Schools Week!
HISTORY: Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Superior have a long history. The first schools began in missionary times with the first mission at La Pointe on Madeline Island. Over time there were 52 schools, the most being 32 at one time. Of the five physical high schools, the last two closed in 1967. The only Catholic college, Mount Senario, closed in 2002. Currently, there are fourteen Catholic elementary schools, serving 1,814 students from about 50 of our diocesan parishes. Most schools provide pre-K programs (22% of our school population) and 12 of our schools maintain enrollment through 8th grade.
IN OUR CLUSTER, St. Francis Solanus School is inspired by the Gospel values of compassion and love. We strive to build a Christian community that involves all members by committing ourselves to serve God and the community through liturgical life, ongoing religious formation, cultural dimensions, and service to all. St Francis Solanus School serves grades K-8 with Sr Felissa and Sr Maryrose.
The School Sisters of St. Francis from Milwaukee, WI, have been working at the Mission for over 100 years. The Franciscan priests from the Sacred Heart Province in St. Louis, MO, have worked at the Mission for 90 years. Diocesan priests began work at the mission in 1860 until 1878, returned from 1918 to 1938, and returned in 1988 to the present.
The Mission & School operates a Souvenir Shop with genuine Indigenous handcrafts, imported souvenirs, and religious articles. The Mission is open to visitors year-round and depends predominately on donations. St. Francis Solanus Mission is located on Lac Courte Oreilles of the village of Reserve, Wisconsin. It beautifully sits on the banks of the Little Courte Oreilles Lake.
